Sorel-Tracy stands out as one of Quebec’s most ecologically significant municipalities, thanks to the extraordinary Lac Saint-Pierre Biosphere Reserve, which includes the archipelago of over 100 islands forming a complex mosaic of wetlands, marshes, and shallow lakes. This unique geography creates a habitat that supports more than 280 species of birds, making it one of the top birdwatching destinations in eastern Canada. During migration seasons, vast flocks of snow geese, herons, and ducks blanket the skies and waterways, while egrets and osprey can be seen nesting on isolated islets. The islands and marshes are also home to beavers, muskrats, turtles, and amphibians, particularly around the Île de Grâce and Île Saint-Ignace. These islands are often explored via kayak or small boat, as motorized vehicles are limited to preserve the ecosystem. Inland, the Boisé du Chemin du Roy and Parc du Grand-Coteau offer additional habitats for mammals and woodland birds. Environmental education plays a key role here—local institutions and schools regularly partner with the Biophare, a museum and interpretation center, to teach conservation and regional ecology.
