Thanks to its location along major migratory bird routes and bordered by lakes, rivers, and prairie grasslands, wildlife watchers are in for a treat. The FortWhyte Alive nature reserve is a must-visit, home to bison herds, white-tailed deer, waterfowl, and beavers. Here, visitors can walk boardwalk trails through wetlands or watch hawks circle overhead from interpretive lookouts. The nearby Oak Hammock Marsh, one of North America’s most important bird habitats, brings in over 300 species annually, making it a birdwatcher’s dream during spring and fall migrations. Moose, black bears, and even timber wolves roam in the more remote parks just north and east of the city, including Whiteshell Provincial Park, a rugged region dotted with lakes and boreal forest. Closer to home, it’s not uncommon to spot foxes, hares, or even owls perched on suburban rooftops. And of course, Manitoba’s wildlife crown jewel—the polar bears of Churchill—are just a flight away, offering a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the truly adventurous.
