Surface rust that hasn't penetrated the parent metal is repairable. Deep pitting or metal that flexes under pressure indicates structural compromise that makes restoration uneconomical.

Step 2: Strip and Clean the Frame
Remove all bunks, carpeting, lights, and wiring before working on the frame. Use a pressure washer to remove loose scale, mud, and biological growth. For the topcoat, cold galvanizing compound (high-zinc spray or brush-on) is the closest DIY equivalent to hot-dip galvanizing. Apply at least two coats to all bare steel, paying particular attention to welds, inside angles, and areas where water pools. Follow with a coat of marine-grade enamel or epoxy paint. Saltwater trailers benefit from an additional rubberized undercoating on lower frame members and anywhere wiring or wood contacts the steel.
Step 4: Replace the Wheel Bearings
Old boat trailer wheel bearings should be replaced during a full restoration, not just repacked. Years of water immersion at the boat ramp accelerate bearing deterioration in ways not always visible during inspection. New bearings are inexpensive compared to a roadside breakdown or wheel separation incident.
For each hub: remove the wheel, pull the outer bearing, remove the hub, pull the inner bearing and race. Install new races evenly, pack both new bearings fully with marine wheel bearing grease, reinstall, set preload per spec, and secure the castle nut with a new cotter pin. Step 5: Replace the Wiring Harness

Route wiring through conduit, secure it off the frame with plastic clips, and use dielectric grease on every connector.

Inspect all bunk brackets and replace any that show significant corrosion or cracking.
