How to Prevent Rust & Maintain Your Trailer Hitch

If you are a seasoned trailer owner, you know trailers require a little maintenance.  While built to last, trailers demand some care from owners to continue performing well. From keeping the bearings greased to managing its routine upkeep, there are several trailer maintenance tasks that cannot be ignored.

Rust is the biggest concern with trailers. The only type of trailer that will not rust is an aluminum trailer.  Rusting is the chemical reaction that occurs when steel, iron, or other alloys react with oxygen in moisture or the air and become corroded. Left unchecked, corrosion can spread, making the steel weaker and prone to failure. As a trailer owner, preventing rust is critical to making the most of your investment. To ensure your trailer lasts a long time, you must learn how to protect it from rust. From learning how to prevent rust to removing rust where it forms, we have a few tips that will help you protect your trailer hitch.

Preventing Rust on Your Trailer Hitch

Prevention is the best cure for rust.

Preventing Rust on the Receiver Hitch

To prevent rust on the receiver hitch, you must give it a protective coating. Ideally, you should use a powder paint coat or a zinc-based paint for the receiver hitch. When coated by powder paint or zinc-based paint, your trailer’s receiver hitch will have a protective barrier keeping it safe from the elements. Over time, the existing coat can wear away and expose the steel underneath to moisture and air. If water gets to the exposed metal and stays there, it will start catching rust. By refreshing the paint coat, you can keep protecting the hitch receiver. When you are not using it, you should cover it using a hitch cover to prevent dirt and moisture from getting into the opening on the hitch receiver.

Preventing Rust on the Ball Mount

On the hitch, the ball mount connects the trailer ball to the receiver hitch. When in use, the vibrations on the ball mount can wear away the protective coating. With the coating gone, rust can start forming within the receiver tube. To prevent this, you should remove the ball mount and store it properly when you are not using the trailer. By storing it away from the elements, you can prevent it from catching rust.

Preventing Rust on the Hitch Ball

For the hitch ball, we recommend using grease to coat it. Since the part will be in constant contact with the other components, protective paint will not keep it safe for long. By applying ball grease, you can ensure it faces minimal friction. By applying grease, you also give it a protective coating against air and moisture, keeping it safe from rust.

Protecting Your Hitch from Rust

Regardless of what you do, rust can still find a way to affect the hitch. Fortunately, you can fix it before it becomes a big problem.

Removing & Preventing Rust on the Receiver Hitch

While it comes with one when you buy the hitch, using the trailer will wear away the receiver hitch’s protective coating. With heavy usage and lack of care, the receiver hitch can be exposed to the elements for a long time, leading to rust. Painting over the area with regular paint will not stop the existing rust. If you simply repaint over it, the corrosion will continue on the metal underneath. Inspect your trailer’s receiver hitch. If it has corrosion around the hitch pin holes and opening, it might also have rust. Remove the rust you see with steel wool. Once you get rid of most of the rust, you must reseal the receiver hitch. To do this, you must apply a layer of anti-rust paint.

Like the receiver, the ball mount also has a protective coating to prevent rust. After some use, the wear and tear will damage this coating, leading to rust. If you see spots starting to rust, apply an industrial rust removal solution, clean off the rust, and reseal it.

When you fail to keep it lubricated when in use and covered when not in use, the ball can start developing rust. Since this is the component that sees the most wear and tear, you must pay close attention to it. If it has developed rust, you must first clean it with chemical rust removal products. Once the rust is gone, reapply some ball grease. Cover it with a hitch bag when not in use to continue protecting it.

Using Your Well-Maintained Trailer to Earn Money

By taking care of your trailer’s maintenance, you can use it for much longer. The longer it lasts, the more value for money you can get from your investment. Over its lifetime, your trailer will cost you a lot. Besides its initial purchase price, its long-term maintenance costs will rack up a big bill. If you do not need to use your trailer to haul cargo regularly, there is a way you can use it to earn money for you. When you use your trailer as a passive income stream, you can use the money to cover all its maintenance costs easily.

Since buying a trailer can be too expensive for many individuals and businesses, renting a trailer makes more sense. Due to their versatility, trailer rentals are popular for many cargo-hauling tasks. The demand for high-quality trailer rentals is very high. If you have a well-maintained trailer on offer, you can expect to get more bookings for your trailer rental.
